MACBETH, Ópera National de México
Shirley Harned, Lady Macbeth

"Nace una estrella:
Shirley Harned"

"A star is born: Shirley Harned"
...It was the first time that she has appeared in Mexico City with the opera Macbeth...For Shirley Harned it was the first time she had done [the opera]....At [her] appearance on stage as Lady Macbeth it seemed she had performed it already more than 50 times. [She] has an enormous ease on stage. A born artist, she sensed the meaning of the role and acted it in impressive form; but a shiver went through the theatre at the moment she interpreted all those beautiful notes that form the melody of the first aria. She told us that she was a mezzo-soprano; effectively, she arrives at the low notes of that tessitura, but as a soprano she has a quality that carries one away. Her high notes are of an exceptional purity and her voice has a velvety nuance that truly astonished us. At the end of the first aria the Mexican public gave her an enormous ovation, and at the end of four acts of this work the public had surrendered to her completely..."—The Universal, Mexico City (Federal District)

Translation:
"The mezzo-soprano Shirley Harned shone in a surprising manner with her voice of a clarity and extent of range that is stirring; moreover, she has an elegant presence and understands the 'mysteries' of the stage. Thus [she] succeeded in being a Lady Macbeth that will remain a gratifying memory."—Excelsior Thursday Magazine Mexico City (Federal District)
